Betting on Rugby Union

Another sport in the @TeamFA portfolio is Rugby Union. This sport is growing increasingly popular with punters and bookies alike as the number of markets continue to grow. We run multiple bets for this sport: Request-a- Bets, Try Scorer bets and Accumulators. Here are some of the most popular markets;

This is the most popular market. Win-Draw- Win betting allows customers to bet on the home team winning, the away team winning or, a very rare result in union, a draw. In simple terms, if the team you back wins, you win.

Handicap betting

Another popular choice for punters looking for bigger prices on the favourite, or in the form of a points advantage on the underdog. See example below.

Example: Saracens (-6) v London Irish (+6)

You back London Irish (+6) to beat Saracens. The final score is Saracens 17-13 London Irish. Saracens have won the match, but when you take the handicap into account, London Irish have scored 19 points which means your bet has won. If the match finished Saracens 21-15 London Irish the market would be settled as a handicap draw.

First Try scorer

Fancy your chances of picking the game’s first try-scorer? Well this market is for you! If your selection puts the ball down over the opposition’s white line, you win!

Anytime Try scorer

If you’re struggling to pick a player to score first then why not back them to score anytime? Although this type of bet is much shorter odds (than the former), it is much easier to predict and can provide some great value when adding to an accumulator.

Points +/-

The points market, although perhaps not as popular as outright betting, is a good way to get involved without having to choose the match winner. Bookies will price up a line in which customers can either go under or over that points figure. Here is an example.

Saracens v London Irish

Under 35.5 points – 10/11

Over 35.5 points – 10/11

@TeamFA’s Rugby Union betting:

During the big international tournaments, we run £20-£100 challenges. The bets for this challenge are typically low odds (around 1/5) which allows us to build steady profit over the course of a handful of games. Examples of these bets are listed below:

  • Straight Win Markets – Due to the large mismatches in the quality of rugby union teams, especially at international level, betting on a team to win a match can often give you odds of 1/5 or similar.
  • Points Markets – e.g. England vs Wales – over 28.5 points at 1/5
  • Handicap bets – e.g. New Zealand vs Italy – New Zealand +6.5 at 1/5

We would recommend using Bet365 for your £20 – £100 challenge bet. Not only do you get a £200 welcome bonus when you are a new customer with them, but they also have some of the best odds around which makes it easier for you to accumulate winnings quicker. They are also one of few bookmakers to offer the extended handicap and points markets which are one of the major contributors to the challenge bet.

In 2016 we reached £650 with our NFL £10 – £1000 challenge. With many major Rugby Union tournaments on the horizon, we look forward to achieving success with challenges in this sport as well. We also have regular Request-A- Bets (RABs) during major tournaments. These are only available with SkyBet and allow for multiple bets within a single game to be added together. We have our own section within the SkyBet Request-A- Bet section, labelled as ‘@TeamFA Specials’ so you can always identify our RABs easily and quickly. Examples of RABs include:

  • The ‘Banker’: England to win, Farrell top points scorer in the match & Jonathan Joseph to score a try anytime – 5/1
  • The ‘Longshot’: England -7, any player to score a hat-trick of tries and over 45.5 points

As mentioned before, Request-A- Bets are solely available with SkyBet. If you’ve never backed one of our RABs before, there are plenty of reasons to get involved. Firstly they have an excellent sign-up offer for new customers whereby if you bet £10 they will instantly give you £30 in free bets. The second advantage of using Sky Bet is that as a customer you can opt-in to the Sky Bet Club, which grants you a free £5 every Monday if you bet £25 the week before.

Both of our challenge bets and RABs are well worth taking part in. The challenge bet is of minimal risk thanks to the low odds, while the RABs are often an accumulation of relatively low odds selections into one bet, and therefore have a fairly high success rate.
