Challenge Cup Final 2017 – Hull FC v Wigan

Hull FC v Wigan – Betting Preview

Rugby League’s most prestigious prize is up for grabs this weekend, as Wembley hosts Wigan Warriors v Hull FC in the 116th staging of the Challenge Cup final. Here at TeamFA we preview the big match and bring you our recommended bets.

Verdict

Last year’s Grand Final winners, Wigan, come into the match at full strength – though the welcome return of key players in recent weeks hasn’t influenced the side perhaps as well as head coach Shaun Wane would have liked. In fact, the Warriors have lost almost as many as they have won this year which has left them with an uphill task in the Super 8’s. Despite this mixed form, Wigan have a great record in finals, none more so than in the Challenge Cup (19xWinners). Wigan stand-off, George Williams, was only 18 when his side last won the Challenge Cup, beating this weekend’s opponents 16-0, and he has been instrumental for the Cherry and White’s this season with the most try assists of any player in the SL competition. Such form should lead to an England call-up this Autumn, and we fancy Williams to be pulling the strings once again at Wembley.

Hull FC, on the other hand, return to Wembley as the current holders and have had a much more consistent SL campaign than Wigan. Captain Gareth Ellis will be looking to end his playing career on a high with another Challenge Cup success, and few would bet against it (apart from us). The Black and Whites have a tough run to the final beating league leaders Castleford and the Leeds Rhinos in their semi-final. However, with just one major trophy in ten years and up against as side that relishes this occasion, we expect Hull to fall just short in the attempts to retain the trophy.
